G8, olympics, international trade etc. These are real issues for russians just as much as gas cutoff would be for euros

How is a gas cutoff involved? Not sure there is any impact with a line from Turkey, Iraq, Iran, to Russia. The market certainly didn't think so.

The G8 is one possibility. Under the present circumstances, it isn't as strong as it was during the 1990s. Ditto with international trade. Given the oil and gas they control, it would be much more expensive if they decided to restrict flow by 10% than any pain we could inflict by embargoes. And we couldn't get some of the big exporters like China to stop trade.
