we were on the gold standard ...gold was the bed rock of the economy in the minds of all .
it was also a sign of economic power and reliability.

during the 1870s the huge silver discoveries(ie.comstock) had disembowled the silver standard in continental europe and bi metalic america...gold was the alfa and omega of world financial stability....england for 300 years had maintained a defacto gold standard and ruled the world......

remember the sherman silver purchase act i mentioned earlier....silver had collapsed and silver mine owners were willing to stoop to anything to guarentee their margins ..
