I know you didn't present it as a panacea in the context of all our energy issues, but it could be reasonably considered to have been presented as one for storing energy derived from solar power, and perhaps more than that ("This is a major discovery with enormous implications for the future prosperity of humankind" etc.)

Its far from clear its even a great invention. And its not something that's really specially connected to solar power. Its electrolysis with cheaper and non-toxic catalysts.

My main point, though, was to prove yet once again that the best approach is one that combines a partnership between government, universities, and industry.

It proves nothing of the sort, an in any case I haven't fought the idea of government sponsoring research at universities.
