Wayne, You hit on the problem. There is no obviously good solution, though allowing banks to operate as the distributors of the money supply and also as profit maximizers and the risk that entails may be one of the worst.

ff, i'd argue that the underlying problem isn't that the system is evil, rather, that the people operating the system are evil.

i'll define evil as valuing their own self interests well above the self interests of the nation (or other people).

if that view is correct, i'm not so sure the system is so important and these kinds of people will ultimately destroy any system put before them for selfish gain - the only question is when.
