There was idle capacity in the US, but using it to create a tank that gets blown up in battle, is in some sense the same as using it to dig holes in the ground and then to fill up the holes.

In an important way its not the same, the tanks in battle do actually perform a useful function, but even with idle capacity its not exactly a reliable way to improve the economy, and while it may have been a positive factor in this case, IMO it gets way too much credit.

Their sales before 1941 where not from money they borrowed from us.

Also I'm not just talking about weapons and war material, and also not just talking about the UK.
