Yes, we are as much tribal as we are one race. Difficult to explain but still true.

These guys are not more Russian than the Georgians, except that they have Russian passports and see economic benefit in becoming part of Russia.

To me, this is another example of the damage that can happen, when people's income is social welfare, instead of letting people be master of their own lives.

Russia's best argument right now, is that the borders of Georgia are not designed by the idea of what a nation is. However, that logic would mean a split-up of Russia, if applied to Russia.

My best guesses for the outcome of this conflict are:

1) Russia occupies SO and Abkhazia, and these regions will continue to drift away from the rest of Georgia in mentality. Russia will continue to have these two regions as a ball and chain, until world history comes up with a new big event that changes many things.

2) SO and Abkhazia get a special status that is internationally recognized. This removes the ball and chain from Russia, may not be a full satisfaction for Georgia, and probably costs a lot of money to the rest of the world, like Cyprus etc.

3) Russia proves itself to be democratic, by having Medvedev and Putin lose power to the opposition, and the new government withdraws completely from Georgia, blaming Putin and Medvedev to have led Russia into isolation.

Forget point 3. That was just a joke :-)
