historically east euro battles dont have good guys and bad guys but ethnic cleansers on both sides. Russia is supposed to be somewhat democratic and georgia is a democracy but neither changes its stripes in how it inflicts pain on folks of different nationalities. And that goes for the south ossetians too who moved into georgia and looted and killed ethnic georgians. Remember how WW1 started and dont be so self righteous. PS Democracy leads to better things but when you combine democracy with a racist attitude toward others who might not want to live in your democracy, well you got problems. US biggest interest in the region is not bringing nato to the russian border but in cooperation with the "moderate" bullying economic resurgent oil and gas supplying Russia. We have huge global issues in common like fighting terror, economic etc. The best we can get for the georgians is georgia proper minus the two autonomous regions. And the georgians since they hate the people in those provinces anyway and although they consider the land as historically their own, will be better off for not having to worry about those folks ever again. Lets the russians deal with it.
