Aldi is west German, and the founders are amongst the richest in the world.

A recent survey made in Denmark demonstrated that a normal family can cut about 50% on the food budget by shopping in discount shops. Instead of spending typically $200 per week per person for groceries, you would spend $100 per week.

I guess most people shop a little in both places - that's also why you find discount shops and other shops close to each other. You only park your car once, and those in a hurry pay more than those who have time to visit both shops.

We shop at Aldi here in Australia. It's MUCH cheaper than the other Australian supermarkets. But the range is rather limited. Most products are private label brands. There are also Aldi supermarkets in the US in some areas. Of course it originated in West Germany.
