When JFK got Krushchev to remove missiles from Cuba, he also promised to remove our nuke tipped jupiters from Turkey.

That was a mistake, more agressive behavior by the Reagan administration caused the Russian's to collapse. The Russians are not stupid, just ignorant of how other countries think and behave.

But signing that missile defense system in poland today is a stick in the eye and it confirms (to them) the russian paranoia about encirclement.

I don't know it is a stick in the eye, but it puts them on notice that actions have consequences, even though Bush is weakened by the war in Iraq. I expressed my concerns here over Bush's weak response, and perhaps I was premature -- he has really toughened his stance since then (but the initial weakness is hard to overcome after the fact). Actions, not words, are what matters here.

When JFK got Krushchev to remove missiles from Cuba, he also promised to remove our nuke tipped jupiters from Turkey.

Yes, and it was a huge mistake. While I think JFK performed well during the crisis, allowing USSR to benefit from their aggression was something that an experienced president wouldn't have done. JFK did well given his inexperience, but a Ronald Reagan would not have caved on that issue.

You don't allow the aggressor to benefit from his aggression. We can see where that mistake is made time and again by weak governments.

I would suggest we build abm in russia proper in conjunction with them. The russians greatest problem with us is our arrogance in conducting fp in their neighborhood without treating them as equals or at least as the great regional power they are.

They aren't equals. Putin clearly aspires to be.

As to us "conducting fp" in their neighborhood, that's been our commitment for years.

You can try to blame the US for Putins aggression but the reality is that it is him, not us, causing the problem.

This is why bush and putin are fast friends---they think in the same way.

Oh, bullshit. Bush has never shown one hint of imperialism.
