Yes a huge mistake, Kennedy made a mistake to start the War of Pigs, and then to wait too long over the missile crisis, then to give in too much at the end. BTW the Jupiter's were neither dysfunctional nor unstable, they simply did not have the range of the Atlas missile's. That was only an excuse to make it sound like this was a smart move.

It was important enough that THEY wanted the concession, so I wouldn't minimize it.

We rewarded Russian aggression. Reagan would never have done this.

JFK did a pretty good job with the crisis, but in the end, this was a blunder. You don't reward behavior that you disapprove of.
