Exploding water heater shoots through Phoenix roof

Associated Press - August 14, 2008 2:34 PM ET

PHOENIX (AP) - A house in northeast Phoenix was severely damaged early Thursday by an exploding electric water heater, which shot through the roof and landed on a street corner across from a school some 200 yards away.

Authorities say a preliminary investigation indicated that there may have been a malfunction in the water heater that caused a buildup of pressure.

The owner of the house, which is near 38th Street and Thunderbird Road, was asleep when the blast ripped apart his garage about 5 a.m. He wasn't injured, and there were no other injuries reported.

A neighbor's wall was damaged by the explosion, which also broke windows in a house across the street.

One woman who lives two blocks away said the blast knocked all the pictures off her walls.
