"IF we can find a way to burn coal without causing global warming, then I would support it!" And since then, he has come out for clean coal as part of the overall package. "IF we can find a way to safeguard nuclear energy and properly dispose of the waste, then I would support it!" And he has since come out for nuclear power as part of his overall strategy. "IF oil drilling is part of a comprehensive energy plan that includes solar, wind, biofuels, etc., then I would support it!" And, since the Gang of 10 did exactly that, guess what? I mean, he said he would and now there is a proposal that covers almost all of his "ifs" that you list. And he says he supports it. So, what is the problem? Yes, he is a politician. Part of being a real politician is the ability to compromise. Which he did.
