Trade and prosperity in Europe would be a LOT smaller if it wasn't for EU. EU is built on international law (i.e. UN). A Europe without EU would imply much more overhead to run each country, and the overhead is already big now. Did you know that the selection of cars that you can buy varies for each EU country? And that many products aren't available for sale in small countries because of some kinds of barriers? I cannot buy a website at 1und1.de because I live 170km (105 miles) too far away.

Also, one of the fundamental principles in the EU cooperation is the territorial integrity of all member states. The principle of territorial integrity realizes that serious problems that would make people think of violating territorial integrity, need to be addressed in other ways. Without this UN principle, I don't think EU would be as peaceful, because these problems might not be addressed properly.

Russia doesn't seem to regard territorial integrity as fundamental for their foreign politics, and therefore look as much for alternative methods. I believe that this is a result of communistic thinking, where people from Moscow could go to Krim for holidays, without applying for Visa etc. Many Russians still think that it is stupid that Ukraine is now a different country.

I believe that these differences in foreign policy thinking is the key element of the current conflict in Georgia.
