"Was their entry into NATO approved? I thought it was on hold. "

NATO has pledged to review the applications of Georgia and Ukraine in December. It was widely thought that Georgia had an excellent shot at NATO membership in 2009.

According to the Georgian president (saw this reported on CNN) in person, the Russians rolled in their tanks first and then he had the choice of either doing nothing or moving to defend his territory.

The Russians always have been great liars. They sure do have their little well translated Machiavelli - with Stalin comments - readily available even when travelling.
