They would have to be more careful with portions and show the carb numbers in each.

I'd like to see healthy food in restaurants, too. But the prices would probably be prohibitive--inconsistent with the notion of fast food. Right now they can serve satisfying portions cheap because they're all carbs and fat. They make their money on hamburger rolls and soft drinks with a teeny bit of the cost attributed to tomato and lettuce.

I just don't know what they would serve in such a restaurant. Certainly nothing that cost less than ten bucks. My best current choice for a semi-fast-food meal is a kabob--hold the bread and rice--ten bucks. I doubt most people would be willing to pay ten bucks for eight cubes of grilled meat. I've noticed that some places have started serving it on a bed of lettuce as an alternative to bread or rice. Better, but still not likely to compete with McD's dollar menu.

Every restaurant we go to is more than willing to give double portions of veggies or a small salad for the starch portion of the meal. Because of my allergy I shy away from things like mashed potatoes and prepared rice- because they are often a prepared food, or the sauce is- and restaurants always oblige by allowing me to select something fresh. Even chains- like the olive garden- were happy to provide me with essentially my own meal- since all their sauces had modified food starch.

I merely asked for plain chicken stir fried with fresh veggies with some salt and pepper. It was quite delicious, and they gave it to me for the same price as one of the chicken meals.

If you feel funny about asking for special service because you are on a special diet, just say you have an allergy. I cannot TELL you how much restaurants do not want to kill you, or see you have an allergic reaction in their restaurant. You really can get very nice, very fresh, specialized meals if you ask. Of course if everyone did this you probably couldn't, but there aren't that many of us here. Don't tell your friends unless you really really like them :-)
