The geologists I read, say Brazil's Parana Basin was the bottom of the ocean as the two continents were separating. Then southern Brazil lifted. As it lifted, the water poured eastwards.

The whole crap that was inside the former ocean, depositied in Sanbtos Basin and stayed there transforming itself into oil.

They use the undersea canyons -that formed millions of years ago- by the water pouring down the rift to seek place to dig.

Basically they look where the canyons end and say here is where the whole crap wahsed out Parana deposited.

The shallower basin of Campos is just the border of the big Tamale that lies on the deep.
