They usually have bananas but not always. Today they didn't have any eggs... So I went next door to the full service supermarket and bought eggs. But it's not like their products are low quality. They have many organic products etc. I believe Costco in the US has a somewhat similar model but focuses more on the bulkbuying aspect.

I stop at Aldi or Lidl almost every day on the way to work, and buy yogurt, bananas, bread, and juice. There is no problem with shortages, supply, etc. There are several kinds of yogurt, juice, and bread available. Failure to allocate money toward ornamentation does not make these chains communist in anything but appearance.

In addition, these stores serve as a way to clear excessive inventory, offering an ever changing selection of things like children's shoes, pens and pencils, roller blades, and small toolkits.
