Enlisting is set at 18 for a reason. If it was set at 30 next to no one would enlist.
The greatest number of draftees by far come Black/Hispanic urban areas(join the army and get a GreenCard!--wow) areas and God/Country/and Bible White Rural areas.
At 18 no college in play, no job prospects(none beyond maybe shoveling sh-- or doing sqeegy for car windows or whatever--maybe cleaning tables at a McDonalds, maying turn to hustling, its better than starving) and just plain poor, and getting strong signals it is time to leave the nest, like it or not.
And at 18 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of everyone are not Einstein.

So they get pay, promises from recruiters of all the sex you can handle(on R and R), and damned it beats hanging at the corner and what that entails and hell the worst thing in army/marines or navy is i get killed, and at this point life seems like such sh-- anyway, like who cares, the kaboom wipeout!
And for some rural kids(too many, really), like wow, i am doing this for Christ!! That means i must be SOMEBODY, damn if i want to be called a redneck again.

We all get the picture.

*****120 US war veteran suicides a week
From correspondents in New York

news.com.au
( at end of article i copy and paste an old post of mine as to why this subject is close to me--max

THE US military is experiencing a "suicide epidemic" with veterans killing themselves at the rate of 120 a week, according to an investigation by US television network CBS.

At least 6256 US veterans committed suicide in 2005 - an average of 17 a day - the network reported, with veterans overall more than twice as likely to take their own lives as the rest of the general population.

While the suicide rate among the general population was 8.9 per 100,000, the level among veterans was between 18.7 and 20.8 per 100,000.

That figure rose to 22.9 to 31.9 suicides per 100,000 among veterans aged 20 to 24 - almost four times the non-veteran average for the age group.

"Those numbers clearly show an epidemic of mental health problems,'' CBS quoted veterans' rights advocate Paul Sullivan as saying.

CBS quoted the father of a 23-year-old soldier who shot himself in 2005 as saying the military did not want the true scale of the problem to be known.

"Nobody wants to tally it up in the form of a government total,'' Mike Bowman said.

"They don't want the true numbers of casualties to really be known.''

There are 25 million veterans in the United States, 1.6 million of whom served in Afghanistan and Iraq, according to CBS.

"Not everyone comes home from the war wounded, but the bottom line is nobody comes home unchanged,'' Paul Rieckhoff, a former Marine and founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans for America said on CBS.

The network said it was the first time that a nationwide count of veteran suicides had been conducted.

The tally was reached by collating suicide data from individual states for both veterans and the general population from 1995.>>

i am going to repost this now Mike
i dedicate this repost to the memory of Michael Heaney, who was my wife's youngest brother.
The town in question is in Carbon County, Pennsylvania
****
<<By the age of 18 most minds have been molded into that which the government wants, and these people think they are about freedom, truth, justice and the american way (one can replace american with any other country/system that EVER was/is/will be Empire, or seeking Empire)

How many KIDS initially went off to NAM thinking it was for truth justice freedom and the american way? The vast majority of them.
How many by the NAM war's end had the inner "what's it" to realize it was all BS, a meaningless FUBAR war? A great deal, a great deal
For some that recognition is however too dreadful such as my wife's brother that killed himself we think just after 4/30/1975.
He was watching the Fall of Saigon on the TV, my wife was there with him and his/her parents, he was sounding a bitter/sardonic laugh a "BS, it was all just bloody BS, a pack of lies" laugh.

He then said he was going for a walk. His decomposing body was found in an abandoned BoxCar about a week later. He had died by suicide.

He is one of at least 50,000 NAM vets that died by suicide.

He came from Patriot Coal Country in Pennsylvania and he killed himself on Patriot Coal Country, the area of Pennsylvania that kids are raised to run and enlist when one's country calls.

He was i sweet kid, humorous, easy going.

He enlisted and served during what may have been the bloodiest year of the war , 1968.

He was in action constantly for a year.

But beyond that we know nothing, as he would never talk about it ever in detail, just that he was in alot of bloody action.

He returned a shaken haunted young man, hit the bottle hard, spending much time at the local American Legion Hall with other NAM vets.
And then he walked out his parents home, 4/30/1975, never to be seen alive again.

Just another statistic added to the long unending list of "The Pawns in The Game"

And from birth most all are entered into the The Machine's We make Pawns to USE process

i would say at least 80% of what we are taught as children are lies.

"So It Goes", Kurt Vonnegur, jr, wrote that, this great man
that many now greatly miss, that rare person that wrote truth and not lies, and if he was hated for that, his honesty, that is, he did NOT GIVE A DAMN if you did, as he was about HONESTY.
i dedicate this post to the late great Kurt Vonnegut,jr, as great an american of letters as Mark Twain. God Bless You ,Mr.Vonnegut Max90>>
