In my case I considered joining the military when the country was busy trying to lose the Vietnam war. I decided I didn't want to be part of trying to lose a war, so I did not join. If I had been born four years earlier or later it may have been different.

I have to say that I never considered it at a time when it could have happened. Of course, I was eligible for the draft, but never got close.

But I will be the first to say that I didn't have the gumption to comprehend what it was all about at the time. I was oblivious. A liberal who had zero appreciation for it.
