The only military operation that was even close to that had the CIA nixing the deal. Well, I suppose it depends on whom you believe. According to Michael Scheuer, who was a CIA agent at the time, Clinton missed at least 10 chances to capture or kill bin Laden, and many of these are well documented, although not all are. Now, Berger was quoted as follows in usa today:"There were a couple of points, including in December, where there was intelligence indicative of bin Laden's whereabouts," former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger told The Associated Press. "But I can categorically tell you that at no point was it ripe enough to act. .... One individual familiar with the discussions, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the meeting was prompted by "eyes-on intelligence" about bin Laden's whereabouts — a term indicating he was spotted by a person or satellite. But there were questions about the quality and currency of the data. This, obviously, sounds a lot like the scenario you claim didn't happen, but from another source. In the same article, they say: "Ultimately, the president and aides decided not to strike. Berger and one other official said military officials never made a recommendation to proceed with the attack. "There was never a recommendation from the Pentagon," Berger said. This was all in USA today on 9/13/2001 -- interestingly, the story has evolved over time. There are numerous incidents. I think there IS doubt as to the precision with which the TV movie replicated the real events -- however, there are at least two incidents where the WH prevented bin laden from being taken out.
