"???? Clues?"

Well, there have been several cases of climate change in the geological record. So far, the clues point to high rates of vulcanism, leading CO2 buildup and greenhouse effect, the mashing together of the continents leading to desertification due to a lot of land being way too far from a coast and even changes in precession. There are more, but let's take these. Precession is one that is very predictable. And, many climate changes/extinctions line up with it. But, not all. And none of the big ones. Continental drift is also pretty predictable. It is slow, though. And it doesn't account for all of them either. Increased vulcanism isn't as predictable. It also matches up with some extinction events/climate changes.

So there are at least 3 mechanisms right there.
