And theories increasingly aren't theories in the traditional sense. My wife is working on a couple of papers in philosophy of science. A big problem in that field is that it is generally accepted that Relativity is reality. Even Einstein didn't believe that. He was constructing a model. As it turns out, it is a very good model. With pretty good predictive value. But, Albert made several assumptions to simplify the calculations. Many of those simplifications he wasn't really comfortable with.

The problem with the philosophy of science is that they often treat those simplifications as reality. And yeah, the implications of those simplifications are really weird. Which should be their first clue...
