To: Maurice Winn who wrote (70242 ) 8/28/2008 6:23:17 PM From: marcos Read Replies (1) | Respond to of 74559 Good luck doing any kind of tech without those 'go-nowhere ' metals ... the people developing mines and producing them wouldn't think for a moment of doing so with using considerable tech, and state-of-the-art tech at that, the industry is always changing, looking for ways to be more efficient, like any other, perhaps more so due to wild swings of product prices, keeps them on their toes, no chance to get dozey riding on old laurels Vista - they were trying to sell me that two years ago, but several SIers and a neighbour and a techie shop i trust said go with XP, not that it's great or anything, it just won't fall apart as much, and so far it hasn't done too bad ... when/if i retire it would be nice to learn enough basics to operate with Linux, there was a young fellow going to show me but he followed a young lady about a thousand miles away and lives there now There is a lot more to metals and mining than gold, it's actually quite a small portion of the whole, especially if you wrap it into the category of 'resources', which includes energy ... but it serves a function, until we have something better On consciousness - around here it takes consciousness and four loonies to get a pint at the local, and in fact [i've watched], it's only the four loonies they ring into the till ... at the same time, it is clearly arguable that without some degree of consciousness you wouldn't have made it in the door, so one can reasonably say it has its place, i guess Really, businesses are businesses, be they tech-related at the moment, or producing metals, or selling popcorn to tourists ... some are well run, some not so much, some have luck, some don't, some have considerable upside, all have downside potential of zero ... both tech and metals businesses can have huge leverage in risk/reward, though once their projects are well set on the development path their blue sky is greatly reduced in the eyes of speculators, who hand over stock to people described as 'investors', this is a term derived from the latin verb 'to clothe', as in to get ready for a costume party presumably, and careful not to be the last to leave ... no, we are all One, you are part of the Borg whether you admit it or not, just another carbon life form doing carbon-life-form stuff on a small rock rolling around the sun So how goes the Qi? ... should be quite simple to whip up something to replace gold and silver as real money, it need only be something that a necessary fraction of the species will trust, for that you'll need something that doesn't rust, can be beaten into recognizable forms, and is not perceived to be subject to the whim of fellow humans ... easy-peasy on the tech of it, a neat trick on the psychological side however
