AFAIK Sony/Ericsson is a big customer for Spansion.

OTOH Numonyx is separate from ST now. Also the JV will supply chipsets to 4 out of 5 top mobile manufacturers (Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and Sharp), so they'll continue to develop chipsets for all major NOR manufacturers. Also mobile chipset sales (and hence the value of the JV) won't increase with Ericsson moving from Spansion to Numonyx for NOR. Because of the lack of a direct financial benefit for Ericsson I'm not worried in a significant way.

Another thought: Ericsson makes mobile phones too through their partnership with Sony. Some mobile phone makers might not like it that Ericsson gained more control over the direction of the development of these chipsets from ST (and NXP, see below); long term they could possibly move elsewhere.

Just for the record it's just a month after ST and NXP formed a JV for mobile products (NXP exiting the business). linuxdevices.com

Here's an interesting article that talkes about both moves: eetimes.com
