It would be nowhere close to 50%.

I'd be happy if we moved 25% of our electricity generation to solar and wind. That has many benefits, but (a) it's more expensive (i.e. standard of living), and (b) it would only cut overall CO2 emissions by about 10%.

Many other conservation efforts might lead to another 10-15% reduction in CO2, and that's if we take draconian steps advocated by Captain Pelosi Planet (i.e. standard of living, say goodbye to your Lexus and hello to your new Smart Car).

Will that offset the increasing in living standards forecasted for China and India, for instance? Fat chance.
