That has nothing to do with whether he diverges from Bush's policy.

First, I should say that I believe Bush's policy is right where it needs to be -- so, I really don't think McCain needs defending. Bush, while beaten up by the Left and some on the Right, is starting to look like a hero and will be remembered very favorably when all is said and done. I heard someone suggest today a kind of Truman-esque situation, and I think that is a great characterization. Bush will be remembered extremely favorably by history.

That said, McCain has varied from Bush substantially. For example, McCain was pushing for more troops and a "surge" long before Bush was ready to be on board with this.

Now, they are both more conservative than they are liberal. But Bush is far more conservative than McCain by most people's estimation. Neither is extreme, but McCain is certainly thought of as a liberal conservative. Do you believe Bush is a liberal conservative?

The claim that McCain is "like" Bush is valid only from the perspective of a liberal who believes, for example, Hagel is "like" Bush or that Lieberman is "like" Bush.

Sigh.
