This Apple blog about an erideshare widget that runs on the iPhone shows another example of dynamic ridesharing:
theappleblog.com

The blog mentions that the program looks cool but its usefulness depends on being able to find rides - the level of participation. That is what will hold this idea from being widely adopted. That is why I think the industry should help support and develop some basic data interchange and interface standards.

Google and Nokia are among companies that have considered dynamic ridesharing including how to commercialize it. I think that it would benefit the effort to have it made into a service so that it supports developers, administration and active promotion.
