I have the DirecTV version of the HD DVR, which can record two things at once, or record one and watch another. This is called dual tuner, and like McMannis, it's a must for me too. I like to watch a recorded show when it's done, so I never catch up to the live program and have to sit through commercials. So usually something is recording while I'm watching something I already recorded.

I used to have the Tivo for standard definition DirecTV and I loved it, it had the same capability. The DirecTV box is not bad, but it's not Tivo. But it was completely free with a 2-year agreement.

It has a 40 hour HD capacity, which I'm having trouble with given all the Olympics high def programming I've been recording, plus my regular shows. But it has a provision for an external hard drive, and now that 1 TB external drives are like $200, it might be worthwhile to hook one of those up. Or maybe even a cheaper 500GB, I'm not sure how much time you get per GB.
