"Instead, we pissed our time and resources away. Nations do make tragic errors of the collective will. The cluelessness of George Bush is nothing less than a perfect metaphor for the failure of a whole generation. The Boomers will be identified as the generation that wrecked America."
I can't argue with that. At least some folks are starting to talk about it. What really bothers me is no one will accept responsibility for any of it. Everyone blames someone else. Either it's the terrorist's fault, or opec's, or china's, or the shorts and speculators. The closest thing we got to confession is bush saying "wall street got drunk". One thing for sure though is the rich elites are taking the money and running.

One quibble with an otherwise perceptive piece: about 8 paragraphs into his discussion, James talks about the "Boomer" generation as wrecking America. That is totally inaccurate.

The powers that run this country have perceived "The Boomer" generation as basically "unreliable" ever since the college kids led the first mass protests against the way "The Powers" had set up America after WWII, and especially after the orgy of fear and paranoia that was the later 40's, early 50's anti-communist crusades of HUAC and Senator Joe McCarthy.

Remember it was "The Boomer Babies" who had been brought up to believe that the USA was the finest, fairest land, the land where everyone had an equal chance, that first noticed that there was a real problem in the American South where inequality was written into the laws and expressed in "white only" lunch counters, water fountains and bathrooms.

Then came Vietnam. And as the college-aged students came out in ever greater numbers against the imperial ambitions of the "The Ruling Class Powers," those who control our politics made a very conscious decision to: 1) keep the Presidency in the hands of WWII and Korean veterans as long as possible; 2) to very carefully "vet" any politicians from the children born after WWII to make sure they were as unlike the Activists of the 1960's as possible and 3) to jump over the "Boomers" as soon as a post-Boomer generation was old enough to take over.

Well, now 40 years has passed and look what happened:
1) every President through #41 (The first BUSH) was from a "safe" generation.

2) In 1992, someone from "The Boomers" broke through. A great leader? No, a thoroughly vetted, great talker who could be counted on push through business-friendly legislation. His push for real Health Care gave them a bit of a scare, but they soon got him back in line. In 1996, they tried one last time for a WWII Veteran (Dole), but when that didn't work out... on to George W. Bush.

Nothing like a drug-taking playboy who got fundamental religion later to represent the free-thinking, activist Boomers, right? But that is right out of their Playbook: calling George W. a "Boomer" because of the year in which he was born, is like comparing Justice Clarence Thomas to Justice Thurgood Marshall because they are both Black. They do it -- but it is total nonsense to compare the brilliant Marshall with the say-nothing anti-intellectual that replaced him.

3) And now, we've got an old Vietnam Vet straight out of central casting for a WWII fighter pilot up against -- surprise! surprise! -- the first Post-Boomer.

We are 40 years on since I first started predicting what would happen. At the time, I had never heard of most of the people who were developed into "Presidential Material" -- I mean Ronald Reagan was the face of the General Electric TV show when I was a kid, not a politician! But look what happened -- that long run by WWII generation, etc. did not just happen by accident.

So put the blame where it belongs -- on anti-Boomer politicians that were brought to prominence by those who have the power to set the agenda and make us dance to their tune.

I see this attempt to blame "Boomers" for so much as playing into the 40 year attack on an idealistic generation that tried to right some of society's wrongs launched by... well, you know who benefits from the perceptions created by those attacks.
