hello rose,

<<there are NO rules of the road>> - fines are huge and lots of patrol. he had an unusual experience, or he drives really carefully when in canada.

<<the architecture is stunning>> - if he says that of beijing, shanghai may stun him, with little neighborhood gardens, cafes, and big stretches of green and water, 1920s hotels and 21st century towers, etc.

<<food is pretty good>> - yes, generally, and he may not have known where to go for the good stuff.

<<almost everything is cheap>> - yes. oil and gas trinidad relations picked up one tab of many tabs and thought the bill was for the tip.

<<the people are friendly and helpful>> - yes, it is cultural.

<<national pride is highly evident>> - yes, as china is on a big mission.

<<CCTV has many channels a couple of which appear to be devoted solely to jingoism>> - fox tv does not have the sole franchise, and even so, cctv is a more trustworthy and informative outfit than fox tv, by 46 to 29 :0)

<<the Great Wall really is great and a moving experience>> - to me, literally, it is a wall, more moving in picture than up close, a defense white elephant. but, hey, money well spent as it is still earning tourist dollars

<<English is rare and even my little bit of mandarin came in very handy>> - yes; not so rare in shanghai.

<<I have now heard every noise related to phlegm that is possible>> - :0)

<<being at an Olympic event is a gift of a lifetime even sitting in the worst seats in the house>> - my wife, coconut and her nanny has been going to about 2 events per day after morning kindergarten, and also taking in museums.

47 months young coconut now does a flip on the sofa each morning after wake up, stretches out her arms as in a routine-over pose, and then rushes back to the bedroom to have a gymnastic pigtail done to her already short hair.

she was learning the basics of gymnastic when in hong kong as a weekly routine, along with skating (she needs to be bribed), swimming (loves it, and diving, and can swim across pool free style), and messing about (her favorite activity, where all of her toys are spread everywhere, along with drawing surfaces of various sorts). she is good in balance, is doing two-wheeled running bike (figure 8s, down slope, etc).

she has been saving some after dinner mints for her friend paul and asking whether paul will be back from italy when she returns to hong kong (yes).
