Well....it's kind of like this. There's more than enough blame to go around but in the end I fault the Packers management. In 2005 when Ted Thompson was hired he knew he was going to usher uot a legend - not an easy task. What he didn't know is that Favre had staying power and 3 years later was still effective. He dumped a couple starting offensive linemen and as a result the team was horrible - everything starts in the pits (upfront). He brought in a lot of young talent in 2006 & 2007 and things really came together last year. A problem that came up in the spring 2007 is that there was a promise to make an effort to acquire Randy Moss - the effort was never made. It would have cost us a 4th round pick and *could* have made the difference last year in winning the NFC championship game - that pissed Favre off because he was lied to. Favre had offered to give up part of his salary to sign Moss. The same request was made this year but once again Thompson made no effort. My opinion is when a guy like Favre wants a player - you get him. 1 day after Moss signed with NE in 2008 Favre retired - again - he was pissed so he retired. That was a mistake on Favre's part. In May of 2008 he told the team he wanted to come back but they said it was too late because all they had changed the playbook to fit Rodgers. Yeah right! So in 45 days they changed all the plays that had been used for 16 years and the team couldn't adjust back to what they already knew? I'm not even that dumb. He made the same request in June and they said no so he asked for his release. Most of this had been quiet (not in the media) until July came. Then Favre got vocal - never a good idea. He wanted his release (which I would have NEVER granted myself). It got to the point where they wouldn't even let him compete for the starting job. They knew had he competed with Rodgers he'd have blown him away - Rodgers just hasn't hasn't had enough time on the field. Finally Favre forced the issue and came in for camp so we shipped him off to the Jets for a 4th rounder (the same pick that was too valuable to pay for Randy Moss the previous 2 years).

So the question is this - would we have been a better team THIS YEAR with Favre at QB? YES!

What we have is a team very similar to the Broncos of the late 90's when they won 2 championships. Very young, talented with some vets sprinkled in AND a solid VET at QB! Favre had a great year last year and I think he's one of those rare guys that can remain effective into his early 40's.

So how will Favre do in NY? I don't think he'll do as well as he would have in GB because he'll be in a new system but by week 8 he'll be looking solid. I also think Rodgers will get better BUT we'll never replace a guy who never missed a start in 16 years - NEVER! We'll NEVER see a consecutive game streak like that at the QB position in the NFL (in my lifetime).

Conclusion - we made a mistake and sacrificed near term reward (maybe a SB this year or next) for youth and potential at the QB position. If your team sucks - thats fine! But when you were 1 game away the previous year I DON'T think you do that. If Favre has a bad year this year people will say we did the right thing BUT he'd have had another solid year in GB playing the system he's always played had we kept him. Thompson is under serious fire right now and WILL lose his job if things do work out perfectly. Some big money people that forked out money in the 40's to keep the Packers from going under are up his shorts - his days are limited.
