I am not saying that the ends ALWAYS justify the means. No, there are many examples where that is not true. But, I think your reduction of my position - that having the Obama campaign fight the smears with a negative campaign - to 'ends not justifying means' is incorrect - in my opinion.

Maybe we disagree on the severity of the damage of the Bush years. Maybe we disagree on whether McCain will continue those destructive policies. Maybe we disagree that stepping over that line into negative campaigning has ANY justification.

And look, a small but important point: I'm not advocating the same lies and smears that Rove made so successful. I'm saying that a negative campaign does indeed work, and it's ironic to see the Republicans cry foul now.
