When I first visited Oakland with my Bay Area friend Bob 25 years ago he pointed out, that in spite of the all black quarters every corner shop was owned and run by a Chinese.
Bob further informed me, a mazed European 'country potato', that while the 'Oakies' invested in Ghetto blasters, the Asians put their money into commerce and profited from the perfect consumer society around them.

Ted, > The ones I am familiar with were.....they had dirty floors, cobwebs on the merchandise, poor quality of produce, damaged cans, exorbitant prices, food beyond its normal shelf life, etc. And then there was the attitude.......you felt like they were doing you favor. Eventually, I refused to go anywhere near stores owned by people like them.

I wouldn't go to those stores either.

But it's funny how there wasn't much of an alternative in neighborhoods like South Central L.A. Just a few years ago, Inglewood successfully blocked Wal-mart from building a store there. The activists there (including Jesse Jackson) claimed it would harm the community, as if Inglewood had any life to begin with. I still don't see any sign that Inglewood is on the road to recovery.

Just think, if Wal-mart had actually opened a store in Inglewood, all those price-gouging, low quality mom-n-pop shops would have to close down. Including the Korean ones. Go figure.
