My point is, the problem with ethanol is not ethanol and food, it was govt interference - "politicians" bringing home the bacon.

I see nothing changing whether it's subsidies for solar, hydrogen, nuclear, or granny's moonshine.

Taxing gasoline would accomplish nothing except become a bigger strain on our economy. The tax revenues from additional taxes on gasoline would be wasted as they are today.
