Care to name a few?</>

Well, while I'm a Wine Century Club member, I'm also a Zinophile and living near to Sonoma and the Russian River, where they sell a lot of futures, makes it easier...

But, my favorite winery across the board is Swan. I am getting Zin and Syrah futures there for just under $20 a bottle and I think just about any Zin Rod makes is in the upper echelons of Zindom ... better even than Ridge. His Cuvee de Trois Pinot is superb and a little over $30 and the Estate Pinot ... which doesn't quite make the bracket, but not by much, is good enough that he is asked to trade, case for case, by big names in Burgundy whose wines sell for hundreds a bottle. And, his Mourvedre is to die for ... but almost impossible to get.

My favorite Champagne is the Dom, but a close second is the Late Disgorged from Iron Horse. It is probably a smidge over the bracket too, but it placed first in a tasting of French champagnes costing $150-450.

Zin again, but just about anything by Carol Shelton.

One has to be in the wine club to keep it in bracket, but the St. Francis Pagani Ranch Zin is right there at the peak as well.

Not every Zin, but many, from Sapphire Hill deserve to be in the group too.

Guy Davis of Davis Family is gifted ... anything he makes.

Got to run now, but I'll think about adding some more. Unfortunately, most of this stuff never shows up in a store outside the area.

Here are a few thread appropriate wines I've had lately that I think are worth seeking out.

Cathrine & Pierre Breton Bourgueil Trinch! 2006 ($16.99): If you like Loire reds, this is a real bargain. A clean, beautiful wine that should improve with age, but is not for those who like wines that explode in your mouth.

Triennes Rose Vin Du Pays Du Var 2007 ($13.59): Dry, classic rose, a great value. Perfect summer wine, went amazingly well with a dish of grilled pork chops with cilantro.

Stonecap Monson Family Estates Syrah 2005 ($8.49): Not quite in the same league as the above, but a good food wine and a great value.

Digger's Bluff Stray Dog 2005 ($16.99): I generally don't like Aussie Shiraz, so maybe I liked this because Shiraz is in the minority for this blend (60% Grenache, 25% Shiraz, 15% Mataro). I'd like it even better if it were a few dollars cheaper.

While I'm at it, I'll list some disappointments:

Heitz Cellars Napa Valley Chardonnay 2005 ($15.50): Weird, sweet, with an obscene 14.5% alcohol level. Not at all like the classic, balanced wines I've always loved from this winery. Joe Heitz should rise from his grave and destroy the remaining bottles.

Joseph Carr Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 ($13.59): Candy. Bleh. This winery has gotten some good press, and was recently highlighted in the NYT by Eric Asimov, a writer I respect. I hope this is an aberration.
