I suspect your mind is the only place where 'they got together,' Jim. Except for a very weak recent undertow, the last 7+ years have been pure, unfiltered GOP. Thinking that the pathetic DEMs have had any say is simply a way to rationalize the transgressions.

There is a big difference between the notion that the past 8 years have been nearly 100% GOP and whether or not the same period under DEM control would have been radically better.

I'm coming to the conclusion that the main difference between the two parties is

a) DEMS want to transfer wealth from medium to well off of the PRESENT

b) REPS want to transfer wealth from the medium to less well off of the FUTURE

Primarily, at least.

The choice of who pays varies (GOP has wealthy pay less) and who gets varies (DEM has wealthy receive less). The similarities are great though -- corporations are the main puppeteers for both parties. The system has been established whereby corporations cannot have their influence reduced. Instead, it is a positive feedback loop -- greed begets greed, and when screeching is heard over your loudspeaker, the system will self destruct. That day could be many years off, and control circuits are being built all the time to enhance system stability (war machine, guantanamo, patriot act, lack of gov't accountability, etc., domestic spying, ubiquitous cams).
