>If Obama becoming president doesn't break the cycle of moral, social, and material poverty African-Americans find themselves in, then there will be nothing left for them to blame but themselves.

Explain?

I have been watching the convention. Michelle gave a great speech and i think her and barack would be great dinner partners. I love to argue politics and i suspect we would disagree alot but i like the family especially those gorgeous kids. There are few republicans i would like to go to dinner with Ten. They seem to be all rich white guys with tudes like inode. But my views dovetail theirs on many issues, particularly economic.
I dont know if anyone else heard this in Michelle's speech--the number of times she mentioned how she and hubby could have had those wall street jobs but chose community service. Now thats noble for sure but i find it just as untoward to dwell on it as i do mccains refuting the 8 house charge with tales of the hanoi hilton experience--something he once said he would never do. Anyway getting back to community service and disdaining wall street jobs, what does that tell the mass of americans who work for pay and make the opposite choice of the obamas. Are we somehow evil? Well that was the implication i heard and i dont like it one bit. Why is a black kid told to do public service, teach, nurse, etc? What the fuck is wrong with creating wealth and thus jobs? Black americans have been captives of the govt bureacracy for so long in terms of benefits and employment. Maybe it would have been better if one of the obamas sought to make some money and encouraged black men to make money in business.

David Dinkins was a lousy mayor indeed but it had little to do with his race. I do take your point that this is a seminal point for african americans if the half kenyan/half white obama becomes president. I bet there are a lot of black folks who love the way things are now and where they are now preaching socialism to the larger african american community. They must be nervous about this half kenyan who does not see the world thru the jesse jackson lens. I think you hit on something here Ten. African Americans may soon have to give up affirmative action as well as other programs that set them apart from their fellow americans.
PS I wonder if michelle and barack are on the same page. Thought she is obviously super smart as well and she comes from a strong african american family, i wonder if in her heart she is closer to Jesse than BO?? And to anticipate your question, why do i assume that BO hasnt bought into this type of thought process. Ans. just a hunch that he is barry at heart.

Ted, > Its not that far apart in the big cities....esp when it comes to the boys.

If Obama becoming president doesn't break the cycle of moral, social, and material poverty African-Americans find themselves in, then there will be nothing left for them to blame but themselves.

Ten, you have to stop thinking of Obama as a messiah or a Jesus. He will be able to make changes but he won't eradicate poverty or hunger. In fact, his benefit to the black community will be more psychological: for the first time in US history, its possible to be black and to aspire to the presidency. That's huge.
