Peter King, the Long Island congressman, says McCain should pick him. So does Bill Kristol. It's weird that he's even being considered. It shows that the old social conservative movement in the Republican Party has truly lost its juice after 30 years, that McCain can even consider a pro-choice running mate. Of course it shows the power of Jewishness in American life. Neocons and their friends are the equivalent of the social conservatives as a movement. Though the press covered the social conservatives to death and doesn't ask the religious questions about pro-Israel Jews. That would be antisemitic. Sometimes I do little lists, thinking that Jews really do run America. From Rahm Emanuel to Chuck Schumer to Lieberman to Sheldon Adelson, Jews are so vital to the warchests of the political parties. Donald Diamond, Haim Saban. Steve Grossman, Ed Rendell. Chairman Howard Berman, who got into politics because of Israel, largely. The Clintons, who have no values at all, and made a love pact with rich conservative Jews. Marc Rich and his friends. And the administration that followed them found its own feverish Jews, Scooter Libby and David Wurmser. Jimmy Carter didn't get to speak at the convention. You got to see him waving on stage, then he was swept off. A giant dis. It obviously has to do with his honestly naming the conditions on the West Bank: apartheid. His impeachment for that is far worse than Clinton's. (Another list: Lewinsky. Lanny Davis. Evelyn Lieberman. Sidney Blumenthal) Joe Biden calls himself a Zionist. Everyone says Obama chose him because he's a white Catholic who connects to the working people, but he also connects to Jews on Israel. I think that's a big reason he got the nod. While Lieberman is connected by marriage to Ruth Wisse, who wants young American Jews to be Israel's army of righteousness in the U.S. I bet he shares that religious program, as he seems to believe that god wants us to bomb Iran. And you thought the social conservatives were nuts. Again my frustration is It's never discussed. It's like that judge in the probate case in Chicago I've been blogging about who quotes Herzl without saying it's from Herzl. He just gets away with it And I think the reason it's not discussed is because Zionism is an Establishment value in the U.S. now. I've said this before, it bears repeating: the American Establishment is invested in Zionism the way it was invested in anti-Communism. Part of this is affinity, part is corruption (the lobby), part is political culture. But you can't say that Zionism is not an Establishment value, it's regnant ideology, and reflects the fact that Jews are empowered. The names on all the buildings, from the Kimmel Center, where Hillary and Barack debated in Philly (and Kimmel gives to Israel), to the buildings at Harvard and Columbia. It's just in the water now. So it's no wonder Jimmy Carter didn't get to speak at the Democratic convention and McCain is mulling Lieberman. philipweiss.org
