Well, there are a lot of people who don't understand the scientific process.

Case in point. The philosophy of science. They take Special Theory of Relativity as proven. Then they tie themselves up in knots over the implications of the simplifications that Einstein made so he could derive his equations. They don't seem to understand that Special Theory is a model. A damned good one, but it doesn't mean that it's assumptions map to reality. Einstein himself wasn't happy with many of the assumptions and worked the rest of his life trying to eliminate them.
