Well, if Jesus didn't exist, they can claim the apostles didn't either.

The apostles were Masons and in the pockets of big oil. :-)

It may not be a question of Jesus exist versus not-exist.
It is likely that the stories in the Gospel are composities of several people of that period and place, including John the Baptist.
