The glitz and glamour and pageantry were over the top, especially for a convention that attempted to portray the contemporary abjectness of the "forgotten man". An earlier generation of liberals would have at least been serious about what they were saying and would have restrained their baser impulses.

He and the Party were there to send back home ~4100 delegates, motivated to work together in pursuit of their goals. Obama's team came up with the idea to expand the 4,100 to 80,000 and included some of them (Democratic, Republican, and Independent) as speakers tonight.

It was a brilliant presentation, on TV. It was managed and timed to perfection (unlike the 1988 Democratic Party Convention, and others).
