Yes, I agree with your point, except to say that tactically Obama shut down a lot of avenues of Republican attack that were eroding his earlier lead. He opened new lines of attack, while dispelling the hit against both him and Demo candidates in general that they will not hit hard. Of course, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but undecided independents, demos, and even reps who say the speech are now inoculated against some of the hollower Republican knocks on Obama: that he is aloof, that he is unspecific, that he won't fight.

And now that the Republicans have hit the panic button in their VP pick, they've shut down the 'not ready for office/thin resume' line of attack. The VP choice for the Reps was much more important than the Dems choice, given McCains advanced age.
