Obama's Speech Taught Me That He Knows His Place

Many a foolish racist has implied that Barack Obama is too young, too "uppity" to know his place. Last night, Barack Obama showed the world how wrong these people are. He made it clear to me, and to anyone listening with an open mind, that "he gets it." He knows where he came from, understands that he has gotten where he is only because he was fortunate enough to be born in this country and no other country on earth. He hasn't nor will he forget that he was raised by hard working working/middle class grandparents and a single mother. He will govern in the interest of people just like them, just like most of us.

Indeed, Barack Obama knows exactly what his place is.

More importantly for me, I looked at Barack Obama last night and saw his heart. This is a man who is unafraid to call his opponents what they are, callous and indifferent failures. He is unafraid to challenge them to a debate on the turf that they staked out as their own. He is unafraid to answer their charges of speciousness with specifics. He did all of this while retaining his decorum and his dignity, but nonetheless he exposed the soft underbelly of the beast and drew its blood.

This speech was important to me. I never supported Barack Obama in the primaries. I was first for Dennis Kucinich, who I found to be the most authentic and courageous of the candidates. Then Hillary Clinton, whose tenacity and committment to the just causes of our country is unsurpassed. I always found Obama inspiring and inaccessible, his rhetoric so eloquent but the man harder to read. I would vote for him, but with limited enthusiasm (and once or twice wondered about whether I would even vote for him at all or just leave the Presidential slot blank).

Last night, Barack Obama did for us what only he could. He showed us his heart, and he showed us that he knows his place. And his place is right alongside all of us. I am feeling very good about our nominee!

Update: And now the comparison is here on the VP front as well. And who can't love it from the Democratic side? Joe Biden is the real deal - courageous, principled, family-focused - a guy who takes the train every day to work just like so many of us. He knows his place too.
