38 MILLION people watched Obama's acceptance speech

Barack Obama's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention was seen by more than 38 million people.

Nielsen Media Research said more people watched Obama speak than watched the Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing, the final "American Idol" or the Academy Awards this year. Obama talked before a live audience of 80,000 people in Denver.

His TV audience nearly doubled the amount of people who watched John Kerry accept the Democratic nomination to run against President Bush four years ago. Kerry's speech was seen by just over 20 million people.

Obama's audience might be higher, since Nielsen didn't have an estimate for how many people watched Obama on PBS or C-SPAN Thursday night.

Nielsen Media Research estimates showed that CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS, Univision, Telemundo, BET and TV One collectively produced a 13.4 national household rating in the 10 p.m. hour, translating into almost 38.4 million viewers for Obama’s speech on either. That was 57% more than the 24.4 million watched John Kerry’s speech from the 2004 DNC, which was covered by the Big 3 and the three cable news neworks.

Obama’s Aug 28 address was also 50% greater than the 25.6 million that watched the Illinois Senator’s campaign competitor, Hillary Clinton’s speech in that period on Tuesday night. Vice president nominee Joe Biden pulled in just over 24 million Wednesday night, while Michelle Obama averaged 22.3 million on the first night of the 2008 DNC.
