Why? The same reason al Qaida failed in Iraq would have still been present.

AQ would not have failed. The reason local Sunni's dared to stand up against the head choppers woas 100,000+ US troops protecting them. Without the US troops, any AQ opponent would have his head separated from his body to make him an example to others.

Now let's go with the factual info. First, al Qaida was treating the locals badly......public executions and beatings, demanding hush money, taking over people's homes without warning etc. So it didn't take much for the Sunnis to change allegiances. Secondly, its important to note the the Sunni tribesmen far outnumbered the al Qaida operatives. Thirdly, the key component leading to the success of the surge was giving the tribesman a monthly salary to join the coalition of the willing......which spared the Iraqi gov't from dipping into their significant surpluses.

So then, thanks to paid mercenaries, the surge has worked and now al Qaida is mostly neutralized in Iraq. And guess what........the US doesn't want to pick up the tab any more and surprise, surprise, neither does the Shia gov't......which brings us back to the beginning of this mess. There is a majority Shia who were the slaves to the master Sunnis but who now rule Iraq and they don't want the Sunnis to ever become resurgent. In fact, they hate the Sunnis. Meanwhile all the oil wealth is in Kurdishland and Shialand........and the Sunnis covet that oil wealth.

So you see nothing has really changed.....this has been the same scenario for decades........but this is an opp. for the US to get its ass out of Iraq while there is still relative peace with only one suicide bombing per week.

The neos have won nothing but a lull in the violence and we best take advantage of it asap.
