Yes, it may definitely backfire. More and more, it looks like a move to fire up the base rather than grab for a significant number of former Hillary supporters.

And, people who were scared by McCain's advanced age and health history are going to be even more scared now by the backup. We could have a president who knows less of what is going on in Iraq than the average poster on these boards.
