We can call this the It's not like he chose an 84 year old Phyllis Schlafly for gawds sake! defense. It goes like this:The strain of Republican evangelical creationism is... according to Darwyn... a necessary and helpful form. They could be much worse and the effective elimination of their general mindset might pose other dangers which could be far worse. The delusional reliance on christian ritual and perspective for one's foundation has its costs which tend to make it self limiting. But that is probably a good thing on balance. It also has its strengths, particularly in the formation of social bonds and as a very real "salvation" from those natural tensions which are simply too much for many individuals to bare without psychological relief of some kind. As Obama has apparently learned from his Mother's family... it may be best to engage them in constructive dialogue and to focus on the sharing of common goals, rather than to tease or beat them about the head to restrain their excessive evangelical drive. At least that's the basic outline of this defense. Needless to say, one must own a great deal of disciplined self restraint, humility and, of course, hope and optimism to make this argument. Having experienced the darker depths of Schlafly's Missouri Valley bred cretins... [French crétin, from French dialectal, deformed and mentally retarded person found in certain Alpine valleys, from Vulgar Latin *christianus, Christian, human being, poor fellow, from Latin Christianus, Christian; see Christian.] it's a defense I find impossible to swallow. Still... if Obama and friends have the Right Stuff to pull it off... yes indeed... it would make me proud... perhaps even posthumously... to know that humanity was capable of such an achievement. But they had better make sure I am not in the jury pool. <vLg> 0|0
