Poor guy....

I'll type his name, but I will not stoop to muttering it. Even once. That guy led a "charmed" political life. Elected PTA chair, then was the only Republican willing to run for County Commissioner in heavily Democratic Baltimore County in the year that many Democrats got sick of the Jack Pollack machine that had been winning elections there for several decades. Then, because the really stupid Maryland Republicans deluded themselves into believing that since he won in Balto County, he could win statewide--and no one else wanted to run in an election that most people considered hopeless until the primary--he ran unopposed for Governor in a year when the Democratic favorite ran in a three way race and was knocked off when a guy named Mahoney who ran on an anti-bussing platform of "Your Home is Your Castle" won, as the other two respectable candidates chewed each other up. Mahoney only won with a plurality, but he still won. And Democrats voted for Agnew en masse to avoid Mahoney. And finally, Nixon needed just a few more votes to go over the top at the convention, and ol' Spiro drove a hard bargain for him to get Maryland's votes.

An amazing political career capped off by years of golf consulting after he resigned from the vice presidency.
