Update at 12:55 p.m. ET. On the investigation into the firing of Alaska's public safety commissioner:

As has now been widely reported, the Alaska state legislature has agreed to spend up to $100,000 to -- as the Anchorage Daily News writes -- "investigate the circumstances and events surrounding the termination of former Public Safety Commissioner Monegan, and potential abuses of power and/or improper actions by members of the executive branch."

Palin has denied any wrong-doing in the case, which involves a state trooper who once was her brother-in-law and allegations that she was pressuring Monegan to fire the trooper -- and that Monegan was axed when he wouldn't do that.

The Daily News has a detailed story, and related video and audio, about what the Monegan case is all about posted here. As it notes, the state investigation is supposed to end by Oct. 31. Election Day is Nov. 4.
