All our maintenance was done at the Saturn agency and well within recommended intervals. The car was bought brand new and not abused. When the transmission locked up (at about 140,000 miles) it was on its fourth alternator. No Toyota I have ever owned had a failed alternator. All pistons and rings were replaced when under warranty (barely) it developed piston slap. It developed oil leaks and several other problems.

There were annoying noises, not just the loud engine, but a clicking in the speedometer and a rattle under the dash. As years went by I found it increasingly hard to get in and out of it. If I had wanted to change the oil myself, I would not have been able to because the filter was not accessible.

I was very fond of the car at first and eventually hated it. Thank goodness my marriage has not been like that.

But I actually once had a much worse car, also bought new. That was a 1960 Renault Dauphine. But that's another epic stpry.
